A recent Vibe magazine article made note of the fact that many popular soul singers of the '70s and '80s have resorted to releasing albums of covers in order to keep their names in the public eye. The quality of these albums has been mixed, but there has yet to be one true triumph in the lot. This album is notable for marking the return of Niecy as a secular vocalist after turning strictly to gospel in the early '90s, followed by a semi-retirement. The fluttery soprano is still intact, complete with the cutesy vocal tics that have served as an influence to artists like Mariah Carey. As they say, however, a voice is only as good as the material it sings, and while there are no outright bad performances here, about half of the ten song set fails to provide a spark. The end result is kinda cute, like your mom trying to stay hip.

Shanachie once again provides the means for a more-or-less inactive vocalist to record an album of covers. Like Ann Nesby 's In the Spirit , Miki Howard 's Pillow Talk , Vesta 's Distant Lover , and Silk 's Always and Forever , this disc is a set of favorites reinterpreted by someone with a loyal fan base; in this case, a fan base that has likely wondered whether or not to give up on hope for a new album. There's an impressive list of collaborators, which doesn't look too dissimilar to the credits of her first several albums. Williams and her crew pull off a thematically and stylistically broad range of material, rarely doing much to alter the original arrangements, yet doing so with easy flair. I guess the only risk is your husband having an affair with someone at work. My husband's simply daily things, like grocery shopping, cooking, waking up with me to make coffee in the morning-are far from unnoticed. My wife chose me, but most people aren't so lucky. I also think that if marriage outside the covenant is a sin, it is not so grave as to be unforgivable. I knew a woman who married a man who converted to the church and she spent the rest of their married life telling him he was not good enough. Ask her on dates. If kids ever came into the picture though, I wouldn't want to be isolated from them psychologically or banned from walking my daughter down the aisle someday. The point of a date is to get to know someone better. They seriously have movies about it.
